Dak is designed as a talking plush duck for kindergartens in Malaysia, to chat with children aged 4 to 6 in Mandarin, English and Malay. Teachers and parents stay in the loop: once a parent or guardian has agreed, the teacher can tell Dak about the child's day, and parents can read what their child and Dak talked about.

How it works怎么运作
Dak is designed to be offered through kindergartens, so the child's day at school and the chat at home are joined up. In the prototype, these steps have been run only with made-up demo data.

With children和孩子一起
This is what Dak is designed to do. It speaks in short, simple sentences, usually one to three at a time, and companionship comes first, lessons second. No child has used Dak yet: all of this has been tested only with simulated devices and made-up demo data.

Dak talks with the child about their day and, if a parent or guardian has agreed, uses what the teacher noted. It says it is a toy, not a person, and points the child back to family, teachers and friends.

Short stories told one part at a time, with Dak asking whether to go on. If a parent or guardian has agreed, the teacher can suggest the theme, and any lesson stays inside the story.

Dak sings a few lines of a children's song in its own voice (it has no music player) and plays small games with the child.

With homework, Dak does not just give the answer. It helps the child work it out first, for example by counting on fingers together.

Safety and privacy安全与隐私
Six things built into the prototype. The Dak AI companion page has the full detail, including which outside service receives what and how long data is kept.

Until a parent or guardian agrees on the consent page, Dak gets no kindergarten notes and no conversation is saved. Each consent is recorded with the version of the consent text and the time. Parents can withdraw at any time, and saved conversations are then deleted.
家长或监护人在同意页同意之前，达克拿不到幼儿园的记录，对话也不保存。每一次同意都会记录同意书的版本和时间。家长可以随时撤回，已保存的对话随即删除。
Without consent, what a child says still passes through the speech and conversation services so that Dak can answer, so parents who do not agree are asked not to let the child use Dak.

While the prototype is being tested, server logs can contain conversation text, including from before consent, for up to 7 days; after withdrawal, copies in backups and logs are removed within 14 and 7 days.

If a child's words match our emergency keyword lists for self-harm, abuse or strangers (in Mandarin, English and Malay), the AI model is skipped. Dak gives a fixed reply, written in advance, that sends the child to a parent or teacher now. Other worrying messages are answered by the conversation model under written child-safety rules.

46 messages a child might say, in three languages, run through the real conversation pipeline after every change to Dak's instructions, conversation model or speech recognition. Our rule is that no case may fail. Most recent full run, 21 October 2026: 43 passed, 3 judged weak, 0 failed.

Dak cannot search the web, read the news, check the weather or play music, and has no way to buy anything. Asked about something it cannot know, such as today's news, it says it doesn't know instead of making it up.

The voice service receives only Dak's own short reply sentences, never a recording of the child. A reply may include the child's nickname or repeat something the child said. The recording of what the child says goes only to speech recognition (Groq, in the United States), and our server does not keep it.

Dak's voice is made by a computer, not a real person. In the prototype the parent page says so, and in its first conversation Dak tells the child it is a talking toy duck whose voice is made by a computer. Before the pilot, the packaging will say so too.

Put plainly: Dak is an early prototype.

We designed Dak's character voice with ElevenLabs Voice Design, which creates a voice from a written description; it was not cloned from a recording of any person or child. ElevenLabs' Prohibited Use Policy (elevenlabs.io/use-policy) requires its written approval for products aimed at people under 18, and on 18 October 2026 we asked ElevenLabs for that approval. ElevenLabs support has since closed that ticket and asked us to take the request to its enterprise team, and on 24 October 2026 we submitted the request through ElevenLabs' sales contact form; no approval has been given, and ElevenLabs is not yet connected to Dak's server. Until ElevenLabs gives written approval, we use this voice only for internal testing and for demonstrations to adults, such as kindergarten operators and partners, outside the conversation pipeline a child would hear; no device linked to a child uses it. While the Dak AI companion is still a prototype, Dak already appears on printable learning materials for children aged 3 to 8: Chinese tracing worksheets, flashcards, word wall posters and colouring books. Most sets use simplified Chinese with pinyin, English and Bahasa Melayu. They are sold as digital downloads on Etsy, in the shop DakDuckStudioMY, which is operated by the company's founder as an individual Etsy seller.
